SitOur Mission Year One:
We have jumped right in. However, jumping in to a new culture is not easy. Moving is easy - living and functioning in a new culture and new language - a new world if you will, is not easy. Physically we are adjusting to a city where we walk everywhere and mostly uphill! Swelling feet, exhausted bodies, no air conditioning and a lot of carbs is not an easy adjustment on the body of an American. We have realized a lot of things we have taken for granted in our own culture. We are learning to become observers first. For example, where does the line start?, is there a line?, where do you pay?, how do I get off the bus at the right stop? Many questions and a lots of cluelessness.
Our desire is to make disciples, but we are seeing first hand how important it is to have a strong grasp of the language or our ministry will be short lived and ineffective. Communicating is key, so year one will be a heavy emphasis on studying the language, practicing the language and cultural training. While we hope to have ministry happening along the way we will make language classes our full time job for a season and after an evaluation of where we are in the language in about 6-9 months, we will focus more on ministry.
